Ammonites were ocean dwelling molluscs, specifically cephalopods, with a coiled external shell similar to that of a modern nautilus. They lived some 200 to 66 million years ago during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods of Earth's history and became extinct around the same time as the dinosaurs.
